Frequently asked questions

Practical information before you begin

Answers to common questions about therapy, assessment, fees, privacy and choosing a provider.

Getting started

Do I need a referral?

No. You can contact me directly by completing the inquiry form. Referrals from physicians, lawyers and other professionals are also welcome.

Will my extended health plan cover sessions?

Many extended health plans reimburse some or all of the cost of psychological services, but coverage varies. Please check your plan for its annual limit, referral requirements and any restrictions. I do not direct bill insurers.

What happens before the first therapy appointment?

You are welcome to request a free 15-minute consultation so we can briefly discuss what brings you to therapy and whether we may be a good fit. If we proceed, the first appointment focuses on understanding your concerns, relevant history and goals.

Fees and policies

What are the fees?

My current therapy fee is $245 per appointment. Assessment fees depend on the type and scope of the work and are discussed before the assessment begins. Payment details are confirmed when booking.

What is the cancellation policy?

Please provide at least 24 business hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. The full fee may apply to a late cancellation or missed appointment. Emergencies are considered individually.

Is what I say confidential?

Psychological services are private within the limits of the law and professional obligations. Important exceptions can include an immediate risk of serious harm, child protection concerns, or a legal requirement to disclose information.

Forensic assessments have different limits and may result in information being shared in a report or legal proceeding. I explain the applicable limits before services begin.

Choosing a provider

What is the difference between a psychologist, psychiatrist and counsellor?

Psychologists are regulated health professionals with doctoral-level training in assessment, diagnosis and psychological treatment. Psychiatrists are physicians who can prescribe medication. Counsellors have varied training and professional oversight, so it is reasonable to ask any provider about their credentials, experience and approach.

How do I know whether a therapist is the right fit?

Training and experience matter, but feeling safe, respected and understood is also important. A consultation gives you a chance to ask questions and get a sense of how the therapist communicates. There is no obligation to continue if the fit does not feel right.

Do you provide both therapy and assessment?

Yes. My two areas of practice are therapy and assessment. Therapy is collaborative treatment focused on your concerns and goals. Assessment answers a defined referral question and may involve interviews, records, testing and a written report. The two roles are kept separate when needed to protect professional boundaries.
